Introduction
Light Above is a first person plateformer game made during my studies as one of my second year’s project. The game is inspired from classic parkour game like Mirror’s edge, and highly inspired from Dishonored, especially the blink mechanism.
The game is currently under development.
Pitch
Light Above is a first person parkour game in which the player must climb up an immense well by propelling himself form wall to wall, only guided by the light coming from above.
Game concept
Light Above is a fast-paced first person plateformer designed for speedrun. In this game, the player find himself stranded in a deep well with no indication, except for this bright light above is head. To reach that light, he can only count on him and his power ability, the propulsion.
Game mechanics
The core mechanic of the game is the propulsion, an ability that the players can use to propels himself in his desired direction, as well as converting any inertia he had in this new direction.
The player can use this mechanic once during a jump, to regain this ability he will have to : Hit the ground, hit a wall (Hiting twice in a row the same wall won’t recharge the propulsion a second time) or to go through a blue portal.
Level design
As said earlier, the player is stuck in a well, but this well has a particularity, it’s not really a well, but rather many wells on top of each other, meaning that when you do reach the top of one, you end up in an other well, but bigger.
So each level is one of those well.
We choose that structure for many reasons :
- It allows us to start with small spaces, building player’s understanding of the mechanics and then convert into way bigger spaces over time, when the player needs that space to express his mastery of his abilities.
- It naturally cuts the world in clearly visible levels
- It gives a clear objective to the player : Go on top of this well
My roles
I’m working on both game design and development of the game.
